The Irondale Ensemble Project is as close as we come these days to the Elizabethan acting companies that once presented Shakespeare’s plays to the Earl of Leicester, Sir Francis Drake and the Virgin Queen of England. ...What is on offer is the miracle of the word made flesh. I wish you joy in it.” —Lewis Lapham, editor of Lapham’s Quarterly

An Arab in My Mirror

February 1-11, 2012

An Arab in My Mirror paints an intimate picture of the different aspects of terrorism and the relationships formed between historic events such as the Algerian war and the Egyptian revolution through the eyes of the many, everyday voices that contribute to the common quest for answers and understanding. Six actors play a range of characters transforming from French nationals, foreign visitors, barbers, hostages, policemen, a stewardess, a bellhop, traders etc…all representing different generations in history from the sixties to the present day.

An Arab in My Mirror has been featured at the Rawabet Space in Cairo, Egypt and at The Centre Choregraphique National in France. The piece will be performed in English and French by a multi-national cast. Irondale Ensemble member Scarlet Maressa Rivera will be a featured actress in this production, in keeping with M. Vincent’s tradition of casting a local actress in each country where the play is performed.

Philippe Vincent is the artistic director of Scenes, a twenty year old theater company based in France. Scenes share the same view point as Irondale, and create work with a social conscience that speaks to a wide range of communities about relevant issues, making this co-production of Arab in My Mirror a strong and meaningful partnership.
